Day 3 of #10-days-in-public Today I had two big accomplishments. My goal is to program a receipt printer to print a receipt every time someone wins a Sprig, OnBoard, or Blot grant onto my desk so I can read about their project. The first accomplishment is that I added code to find OnBoard pull requests from GitHub usernames, download the project descriptions, and use tracespace to render SVG board previews onto the receipts. See below for a screenshot of what this looks like (it’s a screenshot of a subset of a PDF that is sent to the receipt printer - this is all publicly accessible data from the OnBoard repo). The second accomplishment is that I flashed a Raspberry Pi to start getting this thing to run headless! This is my first “real” project using Python, and I’m starting to feel a lot more comfortable using the language - which has felt awesome! I am so inspired reading about everyone else’s projects! github.com/hackclub/hack-club-grants-receipt-printer/commit/0030c42c7c0909a34ccb7ac2709b2f03ff374845

Day 1 of #10-days-in-public: Today, I started exploring Godot. I learned about nodes and scenes (and how to import scenes into scenes), the basics of GDScript (since I already know Python and C++, this was the easiest part), and about delta time. Today, I mostly messed around with the interface to accommodate myself with the engine (it is my first one!). I read the docs and I follow Clear Code amazing tutorial (youtu.be/nAh_Kx5Zh5Q?si=YzWarMtjToemdvpK) P.S. Also started the Nand2Tetris course. Computer architecture really starts to intrigue me (I attached some of my notes 😅) See you tomorrow!

Somewhat of a WIP, but I've been working on the Molerat protocol for the last few months and it's coming along really well! I've implemented a server for it Moleserv in Python, and I'm working on an Ncurses client for it in C currently. It's been a huge and fun project for a while now. It's not 100% ready to use since the client isn't done yet, but it's at a point where I want to start showing it to people. Here's the client I'm working on by the way: git.trinket.icu/molehole.git In the end, this is less of a code/software ship, more of an announcement for the protocol which is ready to be shared. We even have a lovely mascot, Potat the naked mole-rat!

Some more Slack cartography! Used python to download the latest 150 messages from public channels and extract keywords, combine with other labels such as channel size, and then use those labels to calculate channel similarity. Obviously not done yet, but I think the general process is looking nice, just need to refine label generation. Never dealt with JSON files over 200mb though! #100-days :picasso:

I’m learning today how to use OpenAI’s whisper model and ffmpeg to convert videos to audio, then to transcribe it for a personal media library, which has brought a lot of challenges since I don’t work with python programs often! My computer is absolutely dying but when choosing the size of the model to use I didn’t want to settle for tiny :uw_devil:. I’m feeling like there should be a Mac app that does all of this for free and with customizable options for inexperienced users with the command line like myself, so maybe I’ll build one one day!

Mohan Day 6-10 days update - github.com/hackclub/winter/blob/main/vmss2009.md Finally I made it. Now, RFID reader is detecting the RFID card presented to it. Then a python module running on RPI is constantly listening to RFID. Once RFID card is detected, the code is updated to a JSON file. This JSON file is hosted in local host. FlutterFlow platform gets this JSON by posting GET request to the local host URI. Then FlutterFlow validates from Firestore database and gets relevant data to be displayed and shows it on monitor. Things to improve. - Refresh rate is currently around 30 secs. This needs to be reduced to 5 to 10 secs. i.e the time it takes for the data to show up once RFID card is presented by user. - I should make the hardware cheaper by eliminating RPI if possible! vmss2009-winter-hardware-party

Day 2 of Winter Wonderland #hardware-party :winter-hardware-wonderland:, building Project Oreo, a custom rubber ducky. On the software side, I got CircuitPython building in a Pure Nix Shell. Turns out, some Python libraries are built using flint instead of setup.py. Thankfully, there's a mode in Nix to handle that. I can now modify the code that ships with a UF2 by default, making deployment just a one-file-copy (very important when you have 20 of something). Next steps: Look at Micropython manifests to figure out how to include data/image files in the UF2. Track the received setup packets (host fingerprint), and make a function to transmit those to Python from C. On the Hardware side, my friend designed and 3d printed the first prototype of the case at school. It doesn't quite fit (see USB Port area), so needs a second prototype.
